Midair Terror at 30,000 Feet

An ordinary commercial flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a terrifying fight for survival when a FlyDubai co-pilot stabbed the aircraft’s captain and allegedly attempted to plunge the Boeing 737 into a deadly dive.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in a public address that preliminary evidence indicates the co-pilot had undergone "Islamic radical indoctrination" prior to launching the cockpit attack.

The aircraft, carrying 174 passengers and crew, experienced a sudden drop of approximately 16,000 feet in under two minutes over Saudi airspace before crew members and passengers managed to breach the cockpit, overpower the attacker, and stabilize the plane. The flight subsequently made an emergency landing at Tabuk Regional Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

A Fight for Control in the Cockpit

According to flight tracking data from Flightradar24 and witness testimonies, the aircraft transmitted a general emergency distress signal—followed by code 7500, indicating a potential hijacking or unlawful interference—roughly two and a half hours into the flight.

Inside the cockpit, the co-pilot allegedly lunged at the captain, identified as Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, stabbing him multiple times while attempting to force the plane into a terminal dive. Despite sustaining severe injuries, Captain Machchhar fought back against his assailant and managed to unlock the cockpit door to allow help inside.

"Captain Smit Machchhar is a hero," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared in a public statement. "In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others."

Heroic Passenger and Crew Response

Hearing commotion and feeling the jet dive sharply, several passengers and off-duty crew members rushed toward the front of the cabin. Among them were an Israeli plumber, a dentist, and additional off-duty aircrew who forced their way through the unlocked door.

  • Cockpit Intervention: Passengers wrestled the attacker to the floor while off-duty flight personnel took control of the flight yoke to pull the aircraft out of its steep plunge.

  • Medical First Aid: Passengers, including dentist Shota Musayev, provided emergency first aid to the bleeding captain on the cockpit floor while keeping the attacker restrained until landing.

  • Emergency Landing: An off-duty pilot aboard the flight assisted in stabilizing the Boeing 737 and guiding it to an emergency touchdown in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Saudi emergency medical teams immediately met the plane upon landing, transporting both Captain Machchhar and the suspect to a regional hospital under heavy security.

Netanyahu Points to Radicalization; Investigation Launched

In a televised address and subsequent interview with foreign media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu outlined the findings from initial intelligence reports:

"We know that he underwent Islamic radical indoctrination. That appears to be something we are gathering from his personal information," Netanyahu stated, adding that preliminary indications suggested the co-pilot intended to crash the airliner with everyone on board.

Netanyahu noted that he spoke directly with the President of the United Arab Emirates and that Israeli security officials were coordinating with Saudi and Emirati authorities regarding the suspect—reported by regional media to be an Omani national—who remains in Saudi custody.

U.S. officials also acknowledged the gravity of the incident. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee commented on social media that the situation had put regional security forces on high alert, expressing relief that quick action prevented a catastrophic loss of life.
