In a wide-ranging interview with France Football, Barcelona and Spain midfielder Pedri addressed a variety of topics, including his aspirations for the Ballon d'Or, his relationship with teammates, and the club's future under manager Hansi Flick.
Pedri, who was recently nominated for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, spoke about his ambition to one day win the prestigious award, inspired by his national teammate Rodri, who won it the previous year. "The Ballon d'Or often goes to forwards, but Rodri's award shows that the role of midfielders needs to be valued more," Pedri said. He continued with a statement that encapsulates his ambition: "Why can't I dream of winning it one day?"
The young midfielder also reflected on his time playing alongside Lionel Messi, the record eight-time Ballon d'Or winner. Pedri noted how he would always look to pass the ball to the Argentine, acknowledging Messi's superior talent.
On his current teammates, Pedri highlighted his close connection with Brazilian winger Raphinha, revealing that Raphinha affectionately calls him "Pedrinho." He praised Raphinha's movement and their strong understanding on the pitch. Pedri also spoke about the dynamic within the dressing room, specifically mentioning the youthful energy of players like Lamine Yamal and the contrast with the more serious approach of veteran Robert Lewandowski. He said that Lamine "loves to gently tease" Lewandowski.
Regarding the appointment of Hansi Flick as manager, Pedri expressed his confidence in the German coach's ability to lead the team to success. He believes the squad has a strong bond and a great mix of youth and experience, which will help them reach an "incredible level."
Finally, Pedri touched on the eternal rivalry with Real Madrid, acknowledging the quality of their star players, particularly Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. He stated that it's "very difficult to stop" Mbappé in a one-on-one situation.
