MINNEAPOLIS — In an NFL era defined by high-octane aerial fireworks, the Minnesota Vikings proved once again that timely defense and an automatic specialist can still get the job done.
Behind five field goals from kicker Will Reichard and a defensive unit that tightened down in crucial moments, Minnesota grounded out a 15-10 victory over the visiting Miami Dolphins on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. With the win, the Vikings improved to a flawless 4-0 on the season, while the Dolphins slipped into an 0-4 hole.
Reichard Accounts for All 15 Points
Without superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who was sidelined due to a sprained left ankle suffered the previous week, the Vikings' offense had trouble finding the end zone. However, head coach Kevin O'Connell's squad relied heavily on Will Reichard's unerring right foot.
Reichard was 5-for-5 on field goal attempts, converting kicks from 47, 50, 33, 41, and 29 yards. His second boot of the afternoon—a 50-yarder in the second quarter—gave Minnesota a 6-0 cushion, establishing a lead they would hold onto for the remainder of the contest.
Hockenson Carries the Load; Jones Churns Clock
With Jefferson on the sideline, tight end T.J. Hockenson emerged as quarterback Kyler Murray’s primary security blanket. Hockenson delivered a clinic in intermediate route-running, hauling in all 13 of his targets for 119 yards. Murray finished the day 247 yards through the air with no touchdowns and no interceptions, absorbing four sacks behind a makeshift offensive line that lost both left tackle Christian Darrisaw (head/neck) and left guard Donovan Jackson (knee) to injury during the game.
Veteran running back Aaron Jones provided consistent downhill production, grinding out 94 rushing yards on 20 carries and adding another 34 yards on four receptions.
Miami's Ground Spark: Ollie Gordon II
The Dolphins' offense, led by quarterback Malik Willis, struggled to find traction for most of the first half against Brian Flores' aggressive blitz schemes. Willis threw for just 85 yards and was sacked twice, losing a key fumble forced by edge rusher Dallas Turner and recovered by linebacker Blake Cashman.
Miami’s spark finally arrived on the ground courtesy of rookie running back Ollie Gordon II. Late in the third quarter, Gordon broke free through the second level for a 53-yard burst that flipped field position and set up a 27-yard field goal from Riley Patterson to trim the margin to 9-3.
After Reichard answered with his fourth field goal to push Minnesota's lead to 12-3, Miami rallied again. Willis connected on chunk passes with receiver Malik Washington (five receptions, 67 yards), setting up Gordon for a 12-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. The score narrowed Minnesota’s advantage to 12-10 and brought sudden tension to the Minneapolis crowd.
Closing It Out
Faced with adversity, Minnesota’s offense answered with its most composed football of the afternoon. Murray orchestrated a 10-play, 60-yard march, culminating in Reichard’s fifth field goal from 29 yards out to extend the margin to 15-10 with just over six minutes remaining.
After a quick three-and-out forced by the Vikings' defense, Minnesota took possession and methodically bled the remaining clock. The game’s defining moment arrived inside the two-minute warning: on third-and-goal, Hockenson caught a dump-off pass with open turf in front of him, but chose to intentionally slide at the 2-yard line instead of scoring. The heads-up play prevented Miami from getting the ball back and allowed the Vikings to execute kneel-downs to ice the victory.
